The deadline to have REAL ID compliant documents to travel domestically is fast approaching. If you are planning on flying domestically on or after May 7, 2025, you will no longer be able to do so by simply using your Washington State Driver's License. Starting May 7, 2025, all travelers 18 and older will need a REAL ID-compliant document to board for domestic air travel, such as the Enhanced ID or Driver's License. To obtain an Enhanced ID or Driver's License, you will need to go to your local Department of Licensing.

🛫 What Does Washington’s REAL ID Compliance Have to Do with Estate Planning?

Many estate plans include medical directives and powers of attorney that may require a trusted person to fly across the country quickly. If your spouse, healthcare power of attorney, or guardian doesn’t have a REAL ID compliant document, they could face delays when time matters most.

⚠️ Do not wait until the last minute to submit your application—processing time may be longer than expected due to high volume.

✅ Make sure you or your loved ones are travel ready and prepared in the event of an emergency.

🧾 Estate Planning Is All About Being Prepared

Getting a REAL ID is a small step with a big impact. It’s part of the same mindset that drives good estate planning:

  • Thinking ahead

  • Protecting your loved ones

  • Making transitions smoother

You can upgrade your ID at your local DMV. Be sure to bring:

  • Proof of identity (e.g., passport or birth certificate)

  • Social Security documentation

  • Two proofs of state residency (utility bills, lease, etc.)

🆔 Alternative REAL ID-Compliant Documents

If you do not wish to obtain an Enhanced ID or Driver's License, you have other options. The following are examples of REAL ID-compliant documents:

  • A U.S. passport or a foreign-issued passport

  • A Permanent Resident Card (i.e. Green Card)

  • A U.S. Military ID
