Understanding estate and gift tax exemptions is an important part of effective estate planning. Below is a summary of the Washington State and federal estate tax exemptions, as well as the annual gift exclusion amounts for 2026.

Washington State Estate Tax Exemption
For 2026, the Washington State estate tax exemption is $3,076,000 per individual (and, with proper planning, $6,152,000 for married couples). Washington imposes estate tax rates ranging from 10% to 35% on the value of an estate exceeding the exemption amount, with the highest rate applying to estates valued over $9,000,000. Each individual may transfer up to $3,076,000 at death without incurring Washington estate tax. The exemption amount is adjusted annually for inflation.
Federal Estate Tax Exemption
The federal estate tax exemption for 2026 is $15,000,000 per individual, or $30,000,000 for married couples with appropriate planning. If an estate is valued below this threshold, no federal estate tax is due. Any portion of an estate exceeding the exemption is taxed at a rate of 40%. The federal exemption is also adjusted annually for inflation.
Annual Gift Exclusion Amount
In 2026, the annual gift exclusion remains $19,000 per person, per year. Gifts above this amount require the filing of a federal gift tax return (Form 709). Washington State does not impose a gift tax.
